Dietary Diversity

Since April is Celebrate Diversity Month let’s talk about Dietary Diversity! Dietary diversity is another name for a well-balanced diet.  This means we need to include all five food groups into our meals across breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.  Our good health requires a balance of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from each of the food groups.  Some people may need to follow specific diets, but diversity is required within all of them.  MyPlate shows us how to take steps towards this balance.

Welcome back! It’s April and along with it being spring, we are celebrating Diversity Awareness Month. Diversity Awareness was created to celebrate and honor the diversity happening all around us. For us here at SNAP-Ed that means celebrating food from around the globe. But how do we narrow it down? Let’s start with breakfast. What do you do to ‘break your fast’? It’s called breakfast because it is the first, and most important, meal since it breaks the ‘fast’ from not haven eaten since the day before. Let’s learn how people from other parts of the world fuel up to start their day.

Get Moving for Kids!

Eating healthy is only one part of raising strong children.  The other important factor is ensuring they are physically active every day.  Any type and amount is better than none at all.  Find an activity that you and your child can enjoy together.  This way it will not appear as a task, but just another fun part of the day.

This month Massachusetts SNAP-Ed is joining in on the celebration of National Nutrition Month.  We will be having a series of blogs on a variety of topics including Eating a Variety of Nutritious Foods, Healthy Physical Activity Goals, Planning Your Meals and Snacks, and Tasty Food at Home.  The kick-off week focuses on eating foods from each of the food groups, using the nutrition facts label, and making cultural meals while celebrating traditions.  Some recent blogs touched upon these topics already, so this week we will chat about involving children in cultural meals and traditions.  Foo
